San Antonio

We arrived in San Antonio last Sunday after a 2 day drive from Georgia. It was an easy drive considering we have a toddler but Ella and I did great in the car while Ron drove the UHaul. Ron threw out his back at the end of unloading most of the furniture so Monday I ended up emptying the majority of the UHaul myself.

We are renting a house while we house-hunt. So far, I am loving San Antonio though I haven't seen anything outside our area. We have friends up the road with a 3-year old and Ella and Aidan hit it off instantly. The weather has bee cold at night and warm in the day. Everything is huge in Texas and you can see blue sly for days!

It's been a hectic week so no pictures. I'm sure once we get settled, there will be lots more to report. Wish us luck with the house hunting :)

Rememberance Day

Today, I am thankful for everyone who has ever served their country, for those who have lost their lives for freedom, and those friends who are still serving. Happy Rememberance Day - I remember, do you?

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae, (1872-1918)

"In Flanders Fields" was first published in England's Punch magazine in December 1915. Within months, this poem came to symbolize the sacrifices of all who were fighting in the First World War. Today, the poem continues to be a part of Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada and other countries throughout the world.

The poem was written by a Canadian—John McCrae, a doctor and teacher, who served in both the South African War and the First World War. This poem commemorates the deaths of thousands of young men who died in Flanders during the grueling battles there. In 1918 McCrae died at the age of 46, in the way most men died during that war, not from a bullet or bomb, but from disease: pneumonia, in his case.

Girls Day Out

Grandma took us to the Georgia Aquarium today. Ella loved the giant exibits, the penguins, the crocs, and all the fish. We also saw a 3D movie (Ella's first) about a fish named Deepo (sort of looks like Nemo) and the whole time Ella reached out to "catch" all the fish and characters coming at her... it was too cute!

We then headed to Atlantic Station for lunch and a quick walk-through at IKEA. I have a wish list a mile long... thank goodness there's an IKEA near San Antonio :) Atlantic Station was partly finished when we left, but it's now a gorgeous place to shop, work and eat out. There's lots to do and the condos/townhouses are gorgeous. What a treat to see a place where you can live and walk to everything you need...there aren't many places like that here.

Stone Mountain Park

I took Ella to Stone Mountain Park to walk through the replica old town village and ride the train around the "mountain". It's more of a large rock :) Ella enjoyed the train and we had a good southern lunch. The park is large with lots of walking trails - I wish I had Ella's stroller - but the village park is a typical tourist trap. It was a gorgeous, crisp, clear fall day - perfect for a train ride :)

Change is in the Air

San Antonio Skyline...
We have been in Georgia for about a month now but have begun a transition to our new home... San Antonio. Ron accepted a job and we took him to the airport tonight. He's going to start tomorrow and spend the next 10 days or so getting settled and finding a house. We've been looking at rental properties online and have narrowed down a few options that he'll scope out for us. He flies back on the 13th and then the 3 of us are U-Hauling everything to Texas.

In the meantime, Ella and I are going to relax and enjoy the last couple weeks at Grandma and Granddad's.

I have to admit, Texas isn't anywhere I thought I'd live and therefore have little idea about it. We're all excited about the new adventure and chapter in our life... Texas! Who would have thought?!!

My idea of Texas ... I'm looking forward to actually seeing what's it's all about and forming an opinion not based on what I've seen on TV...not to mention getting my first pair of cowboy boots :)
